Brendan a finalist in rural awards

Local stock and station agent Brendan Mansbridge has been selected as one of eight finalists for the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Rural Achiever Awards.
The award is a state-wide leadership program open to men and women aged 20 - 29 who have made a significant contribution to rural Australia.
Brendan has a long history with agriculture, one that started in the Darling Downs region of Queensland and has gradually brought him south, and now west to Eugowra.
After working at the local high school in Pittsworth teaching farming skills to students, Brendan moved with his family to Glen Innes where he worked on a neighbouring mixed sheep, cattle and cropping farm.
Moving south again, Brendan migrated to North Richmond to work as a livestock journalist for The Land.
After working two years as a reporter, he was drawn to Eugowra by a local attraction, his girlfriend Lydia Herbert, herself a top three finalist in the The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl competition.
For the past year he was worked as an agent for Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon, and Co.
Brendan said the Rural Achievers award is something he has always wanted to do.
"I've always been involved in shows and in past years have got to know a lot of previous winners, a lot of them have been great role models and mentors for me," he said.
"I guess I applied for this award so I could hopefully be a mentor and role model for some of the other younger kids coming through and to encourage more young people to be involved in agriculture."
Brendan also said the award provides a great opportunity for finalists to meet industry leaders and politicians through an 11 day behind-the-scenes experience of the 2015 Sydney Royal Show.
All finalists will also receive $2000 in prize money, a 12-month RAS alumni membership and be fitted in the latest country clothing from Akubra and Thomas Cook Clothing Company.
One Rural Achiever will also be selected to represent NSW at the 2016 National Rural Ambassador Awards and this is announced on Easter Sunday at a function celebrating the Rural Achievers during the Sydney Royal.
The award however won't be the only reason Brendan attends Sydney Royal this year.
For the first time, Lydia and Brendan will take some sheep to Sydney from their own Poll Dorset stud which they started in 2011.
Brendan said his job as a stock and station agent has positioned him well to breed sheep that the buyers want.
"We're aiming to produce stock that the commercial industry wants," he said.
"We're trying to breed sheep that have a lot of muscle, have good fat coverage and are an easy-doing animal.
"[Attending Sydney Royal] will show us where we stand against the top studs in the country and where we can improve."

Sale-O Sale-O! Rain Kick-Starts the Year for Local Livestock Farmers

Good local rainfall in and around Canowindra during the first two weeks of January has given farmers a reason to smile. With only a yarding of 2920 head of cattle at Carcoar Livestock Exchange on Tuesday 13th, quality was excellent, with the bulk of the cattle showing good degrees of finish.

Vealers were limited in supply, with yearlings well supplied and good runs of heavy weight prime conditioned steers also penned. Cows were well represented with the majority high yielding and suitable for the meat processors. The usual orders competed, with prices through the categories reaching CTLX record levels. The yearling steers mainly went to lot feeder orders.

On Friday 16th at the restocked sale there was a much reduced yarding of only 800. James Carr from Funny Hill, Binda was pleased with a line of 28 steers coming in at around 350 kg and fetching $890. These were bought by Ashley Clark, an independent buyer from Lyndhurst. "They are going to be sent to south east Queensland to a feed lot before being killed at Casino and then exported to China" he said.

At the moment, anybody looking to restock is paying a premium for stock. Whereas this time last year a 250kg beast was worth around $500-$520, now they are selling for $680-$700 each. Paul Breen from KMWL, Forbes said, "cows and calves at foot have gone up dramatically from last year with prices around the $650-800 mark and this year the same cows and calves are on the market and bringing between $1500-$1740." Ben Emms, from Ray White Emms Mooney said that it was a red hot market on Friday 13th. "I'm pleased to say that this doesn't look like a flash in the pan" Ben said. When contacted about their prices on Friday many sellers were asking if this would last. Ben feels it will, "when you look at the market forces in play it's easy to mount a strong argument as to why this may well be around for a while!"

Tuesday's cattle sale on 20th January, at Carcoar, saw a yarding of 4600 cattle, substantially up on the previous week. The market was firm apart from cows, which were slightly easier. Steers were the winner with one line at 518 kg steers averaging $1222. Paul Breen went onto say that the lamb market on Tuesday 20th in Forbes was steady from last week, with some new season heavy lambs, weighing approximately 135 kgs making $198.00 each. Let's hope this lucky streak continues for our local farmers.

Weaners hold firm at Forbes store cattle sale

Light weaner cattle sold well on a firm market as young heifers rose in value by as much as $20 to $30 at the Forbes store cattle sale on Friday, May 30.
However, cows and calves slipped by up to $50 a unit on the previous month's sale.
Numbers yarded were better than expected, reaching 1750 head, with many pens of yearling and weaner cattle keenly sought after from southern and Victorian restockers who competed against mainly local buyers.
Agents said while cows and calves were cheaper, steers were firm on recent sales and heifers increased in price.
Mixed-age cows with calves sold from $700 to $950, while younger cows with their first to third calves ranged from $900 to $1160 a unit.
PTIC cows sold from $600 to $800 and young PTIC heifers made from $650 to $780.
Yearling steers made $480 to $640 while yearling heifers sold from $380 to $550 each.
Weaners sold well, with steers from $350 to $480 and heifers $280 to $400.
The top cows with calves were sold by KMWL clients Russ and Lorraine Derwent, "Bubalahla", Taralga, for $1160.
The pen of 13 cows were Ardrossan and N-Bar blood, with their first calves from 1 to 4 months of age at foot, and they had been running back with Angus bulls.
Mr and Mrs Derwent also sold another pen of 13 units of the same description for $1140.
Pat and Jannice Deeves, "Bobbadah", Condobolin, sold 22 Angus wearer steers, 8 to 9 months, for $570 to Evan Wilson, "New Park", Forbes.
Dale and Kathy Curtis, Trundle, sold 30 Santa Gertrudis/Angus weaner steers, 6 to 7 months, for $530 to Michael Ryan, "Sand Hills", Forbes.



Fewer cattle but dearer prices at Carcoar

A dearer trend was recorder at the monthly Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange (CTLX) store cattle sale at Carcoar last Friday, boosted by prospects of rain.

All up, 2453 cattle were yarded, which was a reduction of over 3700 head on the previous month’s store sale.

Weaner steers managed to sell to a top of $576, yearling steers to $700, while a pen of Angus cows with calves reached the overall sale top of $1100.

The offering of 496 weaner steers sold from $160 to $576 to make an average of $384, while 441 weaner heifers ranged from $155 to $485 to sell for an average of $308.

A yarding of 482 yearling steers sold from $210 to a top of $700 and an average of $559.

The 210 yearling heifers ranged from $395 to $505 to make an average of $438.

A total of 68 pregnancy-tested-in-calf (PTIC) cows were offered, selling from $360 to $710 for an average of $546.

The cows with calves ranged from $495 to a sale top of $110 for a pen of 27 Angus cows with calves aged from two to four months.

Thirteen cows sold for $320, while eight feeder steers made $370.

Solid support from repeat clients helped clear 140 rams for a 96 per cent clearance at the Legge family’s Ridgehaven Poll Dorset annual on property ram sale at Cudal last week.

A total of 146 rams were offered which sold from $700 to the top price of $3600 and averaged $1121.

Ten stud rams were offered for a total clearance and an average of $2450.

Flock rams reached $2000 while the average price paid was $1025.

Two stud rams made the equal top price of the sale, selling for $3600.

The first was an April 2012-drop ram, sired by Springwaters Wildcard.

Weighing 118 kilograms with an eye muscle are (EMA) of 38.50 square millimetres, the ram was purchased by Ian Frecklington, Hollywood Angus, Peak Hill.

While Mr Frecklington’s Poll Dorset stud is no longer registered, he continues to run 100 Poll Dorset ewes and 1500 crossbred ewes.

“I liked this Ram because he has a lot of muscle, deep hindquarter and he is structurally correct,” he said.

The top prices continued on to the next lot in the catalogue with a Ridgehaven T5-sired ram also collecting $3600.

The 111kg ram was purchased by Chris Roweth, “Nullawonga”, Browns Creek,

The March 2012-drop ram measured an EMA of 34.71 mm2.

Stud co-principal Isabele Roberts said the ram had an outstanding dam line.

“His dam, Ridgehaven U517, had three top lambs and her dam, S1002, had two rams in the top group (of the stud).”

There was strong support from bidders, with many repeat clients returning to put together good drafts of sheep.

Volume buyers included repeat clients Kevin & Robert Norrie, “Cairnhill” and “South Bandon”,

Eugowra who took home 10 rams to average $1540 and the Smyth family, “Millah Murrah”, Duramana, near Bathurst, who put together a draft of 8 rams for an average of $1112.

Lloyd Baker, “Redmore”, Orange paid an average of $755 for his draft of 9 rams.

The sale was conducted by McCarron Cullinane, Orange and Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co, Forbes.



Bygo White Suffolk & Poll Dorset Stud
Flock Ram Sale

Held on Wednesday, August 28th , 2013

A great result for the Annual Bygo Flock Ram Sale with a clearance of 105 rams out of 119 lots.

The Rams over both categories averaged $749.04. There where 46 Poll Dorset's sold at an average of $759.78 and 59 White Suffolk ram's at $1333.05 average.

There was a good turn out of clients, which also saw return buyers.

T R & S A Newham & Sons, Tullibigeal, purchased the top selling White Suffolk ram at $1200.00, along with 3 other rams to average $943.75.

A D Caruthers & Sons, Tullibigeal, purchased 12 ram’s paying an average of $675.00

10 rams went to Peter Green of Eaglefarm’s Pastoral, Bogan Gate, paying between $950.00 and $600.00, with a average of $700.00

The auction was conducted by Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co on behalf of Allan & Jenny Ireland, with Luke Whitty & Tom Tyson as auctioneers.

Moogenilla's $9000 sale-topper

An excellent auction clearance of 46 from 48 bulls aged 23 and 24 months topped at $9000 and averaged $4332 at the annual Mooginella Angus stud bull sale at Forbes saleyards last Friday.

One of the two passed-in bulls was sold post sale, said co-principal Sarah Wrigley, Condobolin, who commented on how pleased she was with the sale result.

After buying bulls out of the paddock for several years, Picolo and Bev Fyfe of Murtee Pastoral, Tullibigeal, went home with the sale-topper, a low birth weight son of Ardrossan Equator A241, Moogenilla G61 (APR) (AI), which would suit heifers but also with growth to suit a whole herd.

The Fyfe's run several large properties where they breed steers from Shorthorn, Hereford and Angus crossbreeding programs. Moogenilla G61 weighed 872 kilograms and its scrotal circumference was 41 centimetres.

Bill and Hatty Crossing with son James or Angullong Pastoral in Panuara district south of Orange, returned after a seven year absence to purchase three bulls for their self replacing Angus herd of 600 breeders.

The trio by Te Mania Africa A217 averaged $5917 and topped at $7000 for Moogenilla G124 (APR)(AI) weighing 786kg.

Darren and Melita Turner, 'Warrawee', Ivanhoe brought two bulls this year and have returned for each of the last three sales. Their two buys were sons of Te Mania Berkley at $5000 and $6000 for their self replacing herd.

The Francis family of 'Gobothery', Forbes, repeat buyers from last years, had their eye on heifer bulls and secured four to $7000 while paying an average $4313.

Jeff Kirk, 'Bolwarra', Condobolin, secured four bulls to $4500 while paying an average $3688, while Julian Roache, Hirno Pty, South Gundagai, purchased three for an average of $4167.

Robert Barden, 'Valetta', Cunnamulla, Queensland, came to buy two bulls and took home five for an average $3000 and topping at $4000.

The sale was conducted for the Wrigley and Sinderberry families by Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Company, Forbes with Luke Whitty as auctioneer.

Weaner steers top $760 at Carcoar

Renewed buyer confidence and good quality helped boost prices for weaner cattle by as much as $60 for steers at last Friday’s Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange (CTLX), Carcoar, store cattle sale.

Plenty of local agents competed with buyers from western areas and far away as Melbourne and pushed prices for weaner steers up to $760.

Cows with calves topped the sale at $1060.

The sale attracted a yarding of 3700 cattle with the weaner steers and heifers making up most of the offering.

A total of 1516 weaner steers were yarded at the sale and sold from $210 to $760, making an average of $479.

The yarding of 326 yearling steers sold from $490 to $710 to average $609, while 189 yearling heifers sold from $315 to $610 and averaged $457.

A pen of 22 feeder steers were also offered, and they sold for $265.

A total of 97 pregnancy-tested-in-calf (PTIC) heifers were yarded and sold from $340 to $760 and
averaged $547.

The 205 PTIC cows sold from $350 to $910 and made an average of $620.

Just 18 cows with calves less than two months old sold from $800 to $870 to average $831.

About 100 cows with calves ranging from two to four months sold from $580, topped the sale at $1080, and averaged $751.

The 61 cows sold from $230 to $670 and averaged $462.

Buyers attended from the local area, Forbes, Young, Coonamble and Melbourne.

Weaner steers to $550 at Carcoar

Upwards of 100 to 150 millimetres of rain in the past fortnight spiked confidence in store cattle prices, particularly in steer lines making from $70 to $100 more than the previous sale five weeks ago when selling at the Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange (CTLX), Carcoar, store cattle sale last Friday.

The yarding of 2600 head, mainly of better conditioned weaner and yearling steers and weaner heifers attracted buyers from Tullibigeal, Coonamble and Hay, together with strong competition from local Tableland areas, Bathurst, Orange and Carcoar.

Welcome rain lifted values and spirits.

Smaller steers weighing 240kg to 280kg were making in excess of 200 c/kg.

Weaner steers ranged in price from $410 to $550, while yearling steers sold from $560 to $760.

Weaner heifers made $230 to $475 and yearling heifers ranged from $320 to $650.

Rain of up to 70 millimetres around Forbes caused a reduction in numbers at their monthly store cattle sale last Friday.

The small yarding of only 700 cattle was of mixed quality with a percentage of light cattle presented.
Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co agent Luke Whitty, Forbes, said while the rain had increased confidence, an immediate pick-up in cattle quality was not possible.

“This is only the beginning – it takes time to grow grass and put condition on cattle so we are still caught between a rock and a hard place.”

Cows and calves stared off with some stiff competition which eased off towards the tail end of the section, settling to sell between $440 and $1060 a unit.

Female’s pregnancy-tested-in-calf (PTIC) sold from $335 to $570 to top at $610 for a pen of 10 two-year-old Angus heifers, PTIC to an Angus bull to calve in August, offered by the Campbell family, Woodstock.

A pen of 11 full sisters to these sold to Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co on behalf of a Canowindra client for $545 per head.

Plainer empty cows sold from $120 to $225, while heifers fared slightly better selling between $260 to $315 per head.

There were some good lines of steers which sold to $495 while the plainer types, lacking condition
sold from as low as $295.

The top pens of the day included a pen of 18 shorthorn cows with two month-old Angus calves at foot which sold for the top price of $1060.

These units were offered by the Naude family from Cumnock.

The Staniforth family, “Bogong”, Condobolin offered 94 Hereford cows PTIC to a Hereford Bull, 2004-05 drop for an average of $540 and topping at $555 a head.



New approach to tagging

The current mob-based system of traceability for sheep and goats in NSW meets national tracing standards and Livestock Health and Pest Authorities (LHPA) is encouraging producers, saleyard operators and stock and station agents to partner with them to ensure compliance.

Ian Donges, Chairman of the LHPA State Management Council, said they are working with all sections of the sheep industry, saleyard operators, and stock and station agents to gather information to support the NSW case to retain the current mob-based movement system.

This evidence will be provided to the Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson in early July in an effort to avoid the mandatory introduction of electronic tagging, or RFID in NSW.

“In late 2012, the NSW NLIS committee and the NSW NLIS Sheep and Goat Implementation Advisory Committee met and agreed to try a different approach to saleyard compliance monitoring.

The aim of this new approach was to ensure traceability and to provide comparative compliance costs between mob-based paper and electronic systems” Mr Donges said.

As a result of these discussions, a trial commenced at the Carcoar CTLX saleyards in the Tablelands LHPA, aimed at finding and fixing compliance problems, and providing feedback.

He said that despite criticism of the mob-based system, the introduction of a mandatory electronic tagging system would be impractical, expensive and unnecessary.

“The cost of RFIDs could be as much as $3.30 per sheep to producers with unknown costs to sale yard operators, agents and processors which are a burden the industry can’t afford.

The trial will continue until June 30 and will also allow us to clearly demonstrate the need and capability to achieve 100 per cent compliance to vendors, agents and buyers, which is essential to ensure the biosecurity of the State is protected”.

From July 1 2013, State inspectors will administer fees and penalties to those who are non-compliant.

“LHPAs will continue to work with and support industry on this issue,” Mr Donges said.

Graziers in the Central Tablelands continue to hope for rain and this was reflected in the prices at the 16th Annual Central Tableland Cold Country Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale near Carcoar last Friday.

About 4650 weaner steers and 1500 weaner heifers were offered and prices were much cheaper than the same sale last year.

But in light of the lower values for primes and store cattle this year, vendors were generally realistic about the prices at the sale.

Some agents buying cattle for clients said the market held up rather well and was as least on par with other sales in recent weeks.

The National Livestock Reporting Services quoted the weaner steer prices firm and the heifers dearer.

Weaner steers up to 280 kilograms ranged from $345 to $535 and those from 280kg to 330kg sold from $480 to $602.

The heavier weaners weighing more than 330kg sold from $550 to $680.
In the heifers section of the sale a limited number of about 100 light weaners weighing less than 200kg sold from $265 to $320.

Weaner heifers from 200kg to 280kg ranged from $294 to $470 and those in excess of 280kg sold from $410 to $535.

After months of training, hard work and fundraising Deb Wenning has conquered the 200km ride while raising an amazing $8169.00 for the Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer for The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at RPA.

The first annual Ride commenced Saturday morning at Sydney Olympic Park with¬ 1,623 Riders who rose over $5.7 million.

The staff at Kevin Miller Whitty Lennon & Co would like to congratulate Deb on her efforts in this ride. She has inspired us by helping out this great cause and has proven that with hard work and determination we can all make a difference in this world.

Ridgehaven rams it up to $4300

The Ridgehaven Poll Dorset ram sale at Cudal last Thursday achieved a $4300 top price while averaging $1127 for 126 rams sold from 155 offered for vendors the Legge family - Jessie Legge, Ruth and Graeme Klingner, Isabele and Peter Roberts and Floyd Legge.

The top-priced ram at $4300 was purchased by the Townsend family, "Emu Vale", Alectown.

Ridgehaven X99/11 weighed 128kg, with an eye muscle area of 39.66 2m and was by Ridgehaven U197/08.

Repeat stud purchasers Les and Gilian Ryan, Gillmore Poll Dorsets, Yeoval, picked up two stud rams at $3500 and $2700.

Volume buyers included Noel Pengilly, Glenleigh Pastoral Company, Eugowra, taking 10 at a $1355 average; Neil Merchant, "Old Chiffer Farms", Eugowra, who took 8 at a $1112 average; Barry Neville, "Romani", Forbes, paid and average of $855 for 9; David Shaw, Trundle, took 5 averaging $2240, and the Norrie Brothers of "Cairnhill and "South Bandon", Eugowra, averaged $1438 for eight.

Many repeat buyers and a number of new buyers made up the list of purchasers.

Ruth Klingner said the average was back on 2011, which was to be expected with current lamb prices and a concerned outlook on the season.

She said Ridgehaven was happy with the results.

"It's great to see the same faces year in, year out, returning to buy our rams," she said.

"We are always trying to improve our product and keep up with market demands."

Cattle producers from across the State filled the grandstands at Jemalong Station, Forbes last Friday, continuing the strength of Angus bull sales this season by clearing all 103 Angus bulls to achieve a personal best average of $5223 for Twynam Agricultural Group.

Beating last week's average by close to $500, the result was made all the more impressive by the fact that last year only 40 two-year-old bulls were sold.

This year the number of bulls offered doubled due to internal bull requirements decreasing from the sale of "Collymongle".

In the breakdown, 48 two-year-old bulls sold to $10,500, averaging $6156, while the draft of 55 yearling bulls topped at $12,500 to average $9200.

Significant buyers included the Meyn family, Westbrook via Singleton, averaging $5875 for 12 new sires.
“The bulls carried excellent genetics and overall figures across the board, while backing up their figures in the flesh” said Mr Meyn

Other multiple purchasers included repeat clients Paraway Pastoral Company, Buttabone Station, Warren, which purchased 15 bulls and Ulladulla Pastoral Company, Holbrook, taking home 8 sires to average $4900 and $4000 respectively.

Repeat clients the Johnson family and Searle family through Ray White Korff & Company, Coonabarabran, purchased 7 bulls each, paying to $7000 and $8500 respectively, while Linden Park Pastoral, Bathurst, average $5416 for its draft of six.

Lots available at Moogenilla Bull Sale

Moogenilla bulls average healthy $5271 in full clearance

A mix of returning established clients and some new faces were among buyers at the annual Moogenilla Angus bull sale who took home the complete auction offering of 50 bulls for an average of $5271 last Friday.

Conducted at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange, the sale attracted buyers returning from the Cunnamulla region of Queensland, Condobolin, Warren, Ivanhoe and local areas.

Moogenilla Stud co-principal Sarah Wrigley, Condobolin said every bull catalogued was above the breed average for the Certified Australian Angus Beef $Index, while 47 of the 50 head were above breed average for the domestic $Index.

One new buyer, Anthony Walmsley and his son Travis, “Belvedere”, Tarcutta, paid the top price of $7750 for the bull they brought, Moogenilla Predestined F202 by Moogenilla D38 (AI), a son of Lawson Romeo A754 (AI).

The bull weighed 910 kilograms, had a huge scrotal size of 45 centimetres and is within the top five per cent of 400- and 600- day weight estimated breeding values.

Eulo, Queensland, return buyers Michael and Carmel Beresford of Farnham Grazing Company bought bulls for the third year and returned home with four bulls topping at $7250 to average $5938.

Another returning buyer Paraway Pastoral Company’s Buttabone Station, Warren, bought 11 bulls while paying to $6000 and an average $4773.

Darren and Melita Turner, Warrawee, Ivanhoe, paid an average $4950 for five bulls.

Ray Blacker Farms, Naradhan, secured three bulls to $6000 and $5917 average.

A large crowd was in attendance at "Tatiara" Caragabal last Friday, 7th October 2011. There were many items up for grabs, including a lot of good quality farm equipment, and we saw competitive bidding amongst the crowd throughout the day. Overall, a great day was had by all and the vendors were very pleased with the result.

When starting a business in Forbes back thirty years ago Kevin Miller never envisage Kevin Miller and Co growing to what it is today, with offices now in Condobolin and Eugowra and an agent in Young Kevin Miller Whitty Lennon and Co continues to grow.

The family run business was started back in 1982 when Kevin and Phyllis Miller took a gamble opening the stock and station agency.
It is now one of the largest stock and station and real estate agencies in New South Wales which services clients right across the state.

Lamb Sales Break Records

Lamb sales continue to break records at Forbes' Central West Livestock Exchange, with a pen selling for $214 a head at the weekly sheep and lamb sale on Tuesday. While the national record now stands at a remarkable $224 - following Monday's Bendigo sale - Tuesday's price was a new high for Forbes. The vendors were GJ and AM Fricker of Reid's Flat Road, Cowra, and the 10- month old lambs were sold by Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co of Forbes. Agent Luke Whitty said the demand for lamb continued to peak, surprising those in the industry somewhat. "The market's booming,"Mr Whitty said on Tuesday afternoon. "The price has gone to levels we've never seen before, and it was quite a surprise to see lambs go to those levels," he said. "But I don't think these prices will be sustained forever." Mr Whitty estimated the lambs would realise a dressed weight of 31.5kg at $6 per kilo, with a skin value of $25. He said the lambs had been fed on lucerne pasture, with some supplementary grain fee.
